California Helping its Schools Clean up Their Water

Good news for California school children! The State of California is earmarking funds to improve school tap water quality this year. The State is offering $9.5 million in grants to schools to improve students’ access to safe drinking water, as well as technical assistance.

"I encourage all California schools to consider testing water quality and replace drinking fountains and faucets when necessary," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. "All students should have access to clean drinking water at all times. Students need fresh water, nutritious meals, and appropriate physical activity to be ready to learn in class."

Schools can work with their local water service to make sure students have access to clean water. Community Water Systems will offer free testing to schools in their water districts. Water utility personnel will draw samples at five taps at each school requesting testing and samples will be analyzed at certified labs.
